Subject: Proposal for an Alternative Health Care Class for NWTC
Dear Executive Officers and Board of Directors:
In light of the current health care crises due to diet-related diseases and to over medication of the population with dangerous pharmaceutical drugs, a class in alternative health care to educate students is needed. NWTC’s mission is to train the workforce with the technical skills necessary to get the job done. Health matters should not be neglected as a part of worker training. A healthy, happy worker is more productive, saving society and employers’ time and money. The time is right for such a class to be introduced.
An alternative health care class should, at a minimum, address the following areas:
1) Diet-related diseases and how they develop;
2) Blue Zones – their health, happiness, and longevity ideas and research projects.
3) The pharmaceutical industry and the medical establishment;
4) Medical Marijuana;
5) The vegan diet as prevention and cure for disease. Hallelujah Acres and Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine puts out much material in this area;
6) The junk food industry;
7) Whole Body vibration;
8) The Burzynski cancer cure;
9) Alternative pain management;
10) Nutritional Supplements;
11) Substance and alcohol abuse;
12) Nicotine Addiction;
13) Fasting and Calorie Restriction for a longer lifespan;
14) Ibogaine treatment for addiction;
15) Alternative Mental Health. How psychological conditions can be treated through alternative health methods, such as, diet, fasting, exercise, herbs and supplements.
16) Horticultural therapy;
17) Gut and Psychology Syndrome: Natural Treatment For: Autism, ADD, ADHD Depression, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Schizophrenia;
18) What the natural health experts are saying about Fluoride and chlorine in the drinking water.
An alternative health care class could be taught in the same spirit as the Psychology and Human Relations, Think Critically & Creatively, and Race Ethnic & Diversity classes are taught in order to aid personal growth and to educate about social issues that effect us all. Assistance might be obtained from the people at Blue Zones and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) for designing the class.
Possibly the poor could be helped by an alternative health care class. PCRM has a proposal before Congress to reform the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by limiting food eligibility to the "Healthy Basics," fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grain. See http://www.pcrm.org/health/reports/improve-supplemental-nutrition-assistance-program. Under the current system, recipients of SNAP are able to purchase the full range of unhealthy foods and drinks that undermine health and increase health care costs. Statistically, the poor who receive SNAP are more susceptible to the highly addictive junk foods that result in diet-related disease. Education, in the form of an alternative health care classes, combined with reforms in SNAP would likely increase chances of success.
I have a friend, Barbara Ann Burns, a certified Natural Health Specialist, who could teach an alternative natural health care class for NWTC. She currently works at a health food store in Petosky, Michigan. She has excellent speaking skills and is very knowledgeable about vegetable gardening having lived all her life on a farm until just recently. I contacted her about a week ago about the possibility of teaching such a class and she said she would love to do it if the opportunity arose. Eventhough I do not have the necessary education and speaking skills to teach an alternative health care class, I could provide assistance in various ways.
Below are some videos and websites that could be used to design an alternative health care class and be shown to students.
